Backing

Backing is the name of the line that you first spool onto your fly reel and is the line that you then attach to your fly line. Backing is used both to fill up the spool when fishing for smaller fish and as a sort of "back-up" line when you're targeting bigger fish.

Generally speaking, for smaller grayling and trout, a backing with 12-20 lbs breaking strength with a length of 50-100 meters will suffice, and for sea trout and salmon fishing, you can aim for backings between 30-50 lbs with lengths of 200-300 meters that will suffice for long rushes. If you are fishing in saltwater, backing is also an important part of your fly line where a long and powerful backing is needed to let big fish run without the line running out or breaking!
