RIO Elite Scandi MDC Kit Short (Multi Density Control) is a complete Scandi style shooting head system that blends Skagit-like power with classic Scandi finesse. Designed as a ready-to-fish Spey solution, this kit gives you everything you need in one box to build a perfectly balanced salmon and sea trout setup for Switch rods and shorter two-handers under 13ft. The Short version is tuned around 12ft tips, making it ideal when you are fishing smaller rivers, tight banks, or casting close to trees and other bank-side obstacles. The Scandi body is very easy to cast and loads your Spey rod quickly, even with compact D-loops. Its refined taper produces tight, stable loops that turn over the included tips smoothly, helping you present flies with control on the swing. The weight distribution is engineered specifically to handle the supplied MDC tips, so you can swap densities without losing balance in your casting stroke. Each kit includes a matched SlickShooter shooting line, an Elite Scandi Body, and a full MDC tip set in a practical tip wallet. You get four 12ft tips with different densities – Floating, Hover/Intermediate, Intermediate/Sink 3, and Sink 3/Sink 5 – allowing you to fine-tune fishing depth and swing speed for a wide range of river levels and temperatures. The Hover/Intermediate section is clear for extra stealth in clear water conditions. Colour-coded welded loops on the front of the body and back of the tips make it easy to pair the correct components on the river, and the printed ID on the front of the head lets you quickly see which head you have rigged. Built on RIO’s ultra-low stretch ConnectCore Plus, the setup offers excellent bite detection, firm hook-sets at range, and solid control when playing powerful salmon or sea trout. For longer salmon rods of 13ft and above or larger rivers, RIO’s regular Elite Scandi MDC Kit with 18ft tips will be a better match, but for compact Spey work and Switch rods this Short kit is a very versatile choice.
