May Day is a smart choice when trout and grayling are focused on small mayflies and refuse heavier patterns. The slim, low-riding profile and sparse hackle let it sit right in the surface film, which often convinces even picky fish during clear, calm conditions. Use the BWO versions during darker, olive-coloured Baetis hatches and switch to the PMD versions when the mayflies turn lighter and more yellow. Sizes 17 and 19 cover most European BWO and PMD situations on rivers and streams where fish are inspecting every detail.

This pattern works well fished dead-drift on long leaders, but also holds up during gentle mends and small twitches.
