This compact scud pattern is built to get down fast and stay there. The heavy tungsten bead helps even the smaller sizes sink quickly, making it easy to reach fish holding deep or in faster seams. It works especially well on stocked and natural trout that are used to seeing small invertebrates drifting close to the bottom.
Fish it beneath an indicator as the point fly, in tandem with a second nymph, or two to three feet under a Chubby Chernobyl in a classic dry/dropper setup. Thanks to the slim profile and tungsten head, it also suits Euro-nymphing when a subtle, buggy pattern is needed. A practical choice whenever fish key in on small, natural food items – even in rivers with few actual scuds.
